Here at Eskandalo, we do our best to treat the Earth kindly. Beginning with the usage of vintage hairdressing chairs, all rescued from dark garages, basements, etc, we gave them new purpose and meaning. The chairs are a huge part of the lifeline of Eskandalo, and we have Anthony from Sotto Santi to thank for the first three!
Our front desk was built using wood from a torn down gazebo my neighbor let me have. It was built by Nick Pokrivchak. Our benches are church pews- one from a barn and one from an actual church in Lancaster. Our table and chairs in the back room were found at a thrift store, as well as the leopard print material used to restore some of the less gently used upholstery- also both from Nick. The frames used to house most of the stuff on the walls were found in thrift stores, and also the pink hair cutting chairs which I found at a used store on South St. Our shop also features some of Rabbit’s modified furniture– she finds old stuff and turns it into art pieces!
From the very beginning, Andy Po of Homebase and I decided to spend the extra money and split a co-mingle account with Waste Management. That means they sort out all of our trash and recycle every single thing they can get out of it. That way, all of our cardboard, glass, cans, styrofoam and plasticware gets recycled for us!
We use all CFLs in our salon, except for the track lighting above the front window which only accepts these weird plug-in bulbs. We ARE looking to replace this entire fixture as soon as possible.
So every time you get a haircut at Eskandalo, you are not only supporting a local business and making yourself look awesome, but you are also helping our environment! And THAT is worth a lot. Thank you all for supporting us and helping the Southside grow and prosper!
